The short answer:for the finest balance of good weather, smaller crowds and better value, aim for autumn (March–May) or spring (September–November). Come in summer for the beaches and buzz; come in winter for whales, wine and the lowest prices.
Summer: December to February
This is Cape Town at full volume. Long, dry days sit around 25–30°C, the beaches fill up, and the city hums with festivals, night markets and sunset concerts. It's the most beautiful time to be here — and the busiest. Accommodation books out early and prices peak, so plan well ahead. One local quirk to know: the south-easter, a summer wind Capetonians nickname the "Cape Doctor" for the way it clears the air. On windy days, the Atlantic seaboard beaches like Clifton stay sheltered while the mountain wears its famous "tablecloth" of cloud.

Winter: June to August
Cape Town's winter is cool, green and wonderfully cosy, with temperatures around 12–16°C and the year's heaviest rain. It's the quietest, most affordable season, which is exactly its charm. Best of all, it's whale season: southern right whales gather along the coast from around July, and the nearby town of Hermanus offers some of the finest land-based whale watching on earth.
