Dinner for Two: Cape Town's Most Romantic Restaurants

Cape Town is one of the great food cities of the world, and plenty of its best tables were made for two: candlelit rooms in Victorian houses, terraces above the Atlantic, and tasting menus that turn dinner into an evening. Here's where we'd book, whether it's an anniversary, a proposal or simply the best meal of the trip.

For the big occasion

La Colombe, Silvermist Estate, Constantia Nek. This is the one people fly in for. It sits high on a mountainside wine estate above Constantia and has been named Best Restaurant in Africa by the World's 50 Best. It also holds three stars in the 2026 Eat Out Awards. Every course arrives with a little theatre, and the kitchen's motto is "Food is our theatre." The Chef's Menu is R2,495 per person. For something a little gentler on the wallet, the spring lunch menu (R1,695, weekdays until 30 November) lets you take in the view in daylight. A deposit secures the table, and children under eight aren't admitted, so it stays an adults' evening.

Salsify at the Roundhouse, Camps Bay. This historic building sits on the slopes above Camps Bay, looking down over the whole curve of the beach to the Atlantic. Chef Ryan Cole's seasonal tasting menu earned three stars in the 2026 Eat Out Awards, and more than 1,000 diners have rated it 4.8. Book a table for sunset so the sky changes over the bay while you eat. Until 26 September, a five-course winter lunch costs R1,090 per person.

FYN, City Centre. This is South Africa's Restaurant of the Year for 2026. FYN brings Japanese technique to South African ingredients in a dramatic room above the city, and the food is as beautiful to look at as it is to eat. It's a stylish night out rather than a stuffy one. Book well ahead: since the award, tables have been harder than ever to get.

For a view you won't forget

Chefs Warehouse at Tintswalo Atlantic, Hout Bay. You're driven down a cliffside to a restaurant tucked among the boulders at the foot of Chapman's Peak, a few metres above the waves. The five-course sharing menu suits two people who want to pass plates and talk all night. Dinner starts at 6pm, and booking is essential. Time it so the sun sets during the meal, because the view is the other main course.

Harbour House, Kalk Bay. Sitting right on the water at Kalk Bay harbour, Harbour House is all about seafood, sea air and the fishing boats coming in below. A long lunch here, followed by a walk through Kalk Bay's galleries and antique shops, makes one of the most romantic afternoons in the Cape. It's open daily from noon to 10pm.

For candlelight and atmosphere

Kloof Street House, Gardens. In a Victorian house near the top of Kloof Street, every room has its own character: a library lounge with Chesterfield couches, dining rooms with fireplaces, and a garden strung with fairy lights. It's the most romantic room in the city for a relaxed dinner rather than a formal one. On a winter night, ask for a table near the fire. In summer, sit in the garden.

Asoka, Kloof Street. This restaurant is built around one of Cape Town's oldest olive trees, which grows right through the middle of the room. Soft lighting and an Asian-fusion sharing menu make it feel like a secret. On Tuesdays and Sundays, there's live jazz. Go for dinner and stay for a cocktail as the music plays.

A few tips for the perfect table

Book early, especially for the tasting menus. La Colombe, Salsify and FYN book out weeks ahead in summer. If your trip falls over Valentine's Day or the December holidays, book as soon as you have dates.
Mention the occasion. Cape Town's best restaurants love a celebration. Say it's an anniversary or a proposal when you book, and ask for a window or terrace table.
Plan for the view. For the view-led restaurants, work backwards from sunset. You'll want to be seated about 30 minutes before the sun goes down.
