Cape Town's Best Family Beaches and Tidal Pools
Cape Town's beaches are beautiful, but the Atlantic is icy and the swell can be unpredictable — which is why locals with kids tend to split their beach days between the big, iconic names and a shortlist of calmer tidal pools for when the little ones need something gentler. Here's how to think about both.
The iconic beaches, and what they're actually like with kids
Camps Bay is the postcard shot, white sand, a palm-lined promenade lined with restaurants, and a playground right across the road for when the kids need a break from digging. The water's genuinely cold and the swell picks up quickly, so it suits families with older kids and confident swimmers more than toddlers. Clifton, just around the bend, is the better pick for smaller children, its four coves are more sheltered from the wind, and Fourth Beach in particular is a local favourite for family picnics thanks to its calmer corner and easy parking.
Llandudno is stunning and worth the drive, but it's honestly more of a scenic sunset-picnic beach than a swimming one, the shore break can get big, so it suits older kids who want to try boogie boarding rather than toddlers paddling at the water's edge. Scarborough, further down the peninsula, is the wilder, quieter option, cooler water, fewer crowds, and better suited to a windy afternoon of kite-flying and rock-pooling than a swim.
And Muizenberg deserves its reputation as Cape Town's most family-friendly beach full stop, gentle, rolling waves, a long stretch of safe sand, the famous colourful bathing huts for photos, and more surf schools than anywhere else on the peninsula if your kids want to actually learn. It's the one beach on this list where a five-year-old and a teenager can both have a genuinely good day.
For calmer water: the tidal pools
When the swell's too much or you've got a toddler in tow, Cape Town's tidal pools are the better bet. Milton Tidal Pool in Sea Point is small, sheltered from the Atlantic swell, and ideal for first-time swimmers. St James Tidal Pool, on the False Bay side, pairs a large pool with a sandy beach, colourful changing huts, and a permanent lifeguard. Dalebrook in Kalk Bay is a local favourite for slightly older kids who like jumping off the central rocks, and Miller's Point near Simon's Town even has a built-in slide for the younger ones, plus braai spots for a full day out (just watch for baboons in that area).

False Bay beats the Atlantic Seaboard for water temperature every time, if warmth matters more than the view, head to Muizenberg, St James or Dalebrook over Camps Bay or Clifton.
